Chemical Etching vs Laser Engraving vs UV Printing: Which Is Best for Industrial Labels?

If you're ordering industrial labels for the first time, it's not always obvious why one label is chemically etched, another is laser engraved, and another is UV printed - or which method suits your application. This guide explains the three main production methods we use and how to choose between them.

Chemical Etching

Chemical etching uses a controlled acid process to remove material from the surface of a metal label, revealing the design or text below. It's a well-established method for metal labels such as stainless steel, aluminium and brass, and produces a crisp, permanent result that won't wear off with handling or cleaning.

Best for: nameplates, asset tags and identification labels where a traditional, highly durable engraved finish is wanted, particularly in metal.

Laser Engraving

Laser engraving uses a focused laser to cut or mark the surface of a material, producing sharp, precise text and graphics. It works well across a range of materials, including Traffolyte, aluminium and stainless steel, and is particularly good for fine detail, small text, sequential numbering and QR codes or barcodes.

Best for: Traffolyte panel labels, sequentially numbered asset tags, and labels needing fine detail or scannable codes.

UV Direct Printing

UV printing applies ink directly to the surface of a label using UV light to cure it instantly, allowing full colour designs, logos and multi-colour graphics that engraving methods can't reproduce. It's a good option when a label needs colour branding or detailed artwork rather than plain engraved text.

Best for: labels needing full colour, logos, or detailed graphic artwork rather than single-colour engraved text.

Which Method Should You Choose?

In practice, the material and application usually point you towards the right method rather than it being an open choice. Traffolyte panel and control labels are typically laser engraved or routed for clean, high-contrast text. Stainless steel, aluminium and brass nameplates and asset tags are commonly chemically etched or laser engraved depending on the finish wanted. Where full colour or a logo is needed on a metal or rigid label, UV printing is usually the better fit.
