There's no single mandatory UK colour standard covering every valve type across every industry, so many sites either follow their mechanical and electrical (M&E) consultant's specification or maintain their own consistent in-house scheme. Materials for Valve Tags
316L stainless steel is the most common choice for valve tags, since plant rooms and pipework runs are often damp, washed down, or otherwise demanding environments where corrosion resistance matters. Anodised aluminium is a lighter, more cost-effective option for indoor, drier plant rooms where budget or weight is more of a factor than outright corrosion resistance. Both can be engraved with numbers, system codes, arrows and wording, and both take fixing holes, split rings or ball chain depending on how the tag needs to attach to the valve or pipework.
Fixing Options
Valve tags are typically fixed in one of a few ways: a fixing hole for a cable tie or wire, a split ring, or a length of ball chain that loops around the valve handle or adjacent pipework.
